Lear, a resident at the New Lebanon, New York, community, kept his debts and credits from February 23, 1825, to February 4, 1829, in this account book. Part of the entry for the first day reads "David Lear began to grind at the Stone Grist Mill at 16 dollars per month." He bought such items as food, tea, tobacco, textile fabrics, shoes, a broom, a spelling book, a rocking chair, a stove, feathers (bought by the pound), tumblers, and a pair of goggles. He paid someone to weave for him, had a great wheel mended, and paid the Second Family for dressing cloth. He was paid regularly for his milling activities; however, this book was not used to record that work. The accounts were settled between Lear and Stephen Munson.

The 1850 census for New York lists a David Lear who was a miller living in Kinderhook, Columbia County. This is probably the same man who kept these accounts. David Lear of Kinderhook was married to Susan Garvey, and they had several children, including a son David T. who was also a miller and who had been born in Lebanon, N.Y.
